The clinics of Twin Cities Occupational Health & Rehabilitation (TCOHR) have partnered with numerous employers to develop and conduct Pre-Work Screens as a pre-hire and return-to-work tool. Our clientele include refineries, transportation companies, municipalities, school districts, manufacturers, service businesses. The following overview is offered to help simplify the process for implementing legal, successful and economical Pre-Work Screening programs.
Three Essential Elements of an ADA-compliant Pre-Work Screen Program
(based upon observations and measurements of Task Factors (posture, weights, heights, temperatures, etc), Frequency of activities, and special Descriptions of those activities.
2) Functional Job Description
ADA-compliant three-point validation:
a) The employer's identification of the essential functions of the job;
b) The actual measuring of the essential functions (lifting carrying, pushing, pulling);
c) Verification by current employees / supervisors that the jobs function is ‘essential’.
3) Pre-Work Screen HPE / FCE / Musculoskeletal Exam
A Human Performance Evaluation (HPE) is used for Pre-Hire and a Functional Capacity Evaluation (FCE) is used for Return-to-Work assessments.
Musculoskeletal evaluations assess muscular and joint strength, range of motion and balance.
